BRIAN REGELIN AND BRETT VINZANT WIN CABELA’S REGIONAL WALLEYE CHAMPIONSHIP

Brian Regelin & Brett Vinzant Win Cabela's Regional Walleye Championship

OGALLALA, NE. – Brian Regelin and Brett Vinzant of Cozad, NE and Bertrand, NE landed $10,000 in cash and $1,000 in Cabela’s Anglers Cash Sunday July 17, 2011 after catching seven walleyes weighing 40.7 pounds for 7 fish during the two day Cabela’s Regional Walleye Championship on Lake McConaughy.

NWT fisherman Regelin and Vinzant caught their biggest fish of the tournament on day 2, a 29-incher, within minutes of wetting their first lines to continue to rise up the leader board. They were able to hold off the fierce five state regional competition weighing 2 fish on day two for 17.64 pounds. The catch gave Regelin and Vinzant the advantage over runner-up Jason Erickson and John Hupfer from North Platte, NE, who landed 10 walleyes weighing 34.36 pounds, and earned $6,000. “Things really started out good on day 2 when we pulled in our first spot and caught a big one.” said Vinzant, “When we got that one in the boat that took the pressure off. The first hour of fishing was just crazy for us. To have those two fish in the box in the first hour was amazing.” Regelin and Vinzant trolled spinnerbaits to catch their fish throughout the tournament. The majority of the fish were caught in 30-45 feet of water. Alewives were another key ingredient of the productive pattern, as large clouds of the bait fish were present in the areas targeted. “When we saw bait up high we would raise our presentation.” Said Vinzant.  It is a great feeling to win this tournament with the great quality of fisherman in the field.  The size of fish in BIG MAC is Incredible.”

Jason Erickson commented on finishing second; “We caught our fish in the trees on jigs.  It was a great tournament to fish and having all the teams from all 5 states was great.  Also, to win $6000 for finishing second was awesome.”

2nd Place--Erickson
2ND PLACE

Finishing in third Place and winning $4000 was the team of Ev Tarrell and Jeff Mekelburg from Sidney, NE and Fleming, CO.  When Ev was asked about finishing in third he commented; “Just to earn a spot and attend the Regional was a great experience. Jeff and I were extremely impressed and humbled by the level of anglers that were competing and the quality of the tournament itself. When you understand the level of competition, coming in 3rd was a dream come true for both Jeff and I.  We can’t say “thanks” enough to the sponsors of the event, the people behind the scenes, and to the anglers themselves for all coming together to make this event what it was. Congratulations to everyone for a great year! We can’t wait to try and earn a spot in 2012.”

Cabela’s, Allied Insurance, and Pepsi were also a big help in sponsoring this great event.  Nearly 60 kids showed up to take part in the clinic and were taught how to tie knots, use slip bobbers, and cast.  Thanks to all of the anglers who helped with the clinic.
